The most evil way to start off the morning was having a meeting, in my not so humble opinion. Unfortunately, needs must. We had far too many people working multiple sites; information was sure to get lost in the process. It would help if we were all on the same page, transferring information around, so that what one person knew might help the other put some pieces together. Hence, meeting.

We started out with me, Brandon, Sarah, Agent Gilmore, and another agent I hadn’t yet met: Agent Tennet. He was a lanky redhead with sharp cheekbones and a ready smile.

“Sorry I lost Tyson to protection duty,” Tennet said while handing a folder to me, “but he did a lot of legwork before he left. Really helped. Here’s our shortlist of possible landscaping logos. Is Sarah sitting with you?”

I indicated the seat next to me. “Here.”

Tennet didn’t skip a beat, just looked toward the space. “Miss, if you’d tell me if anything looks right to you. A guess is fine. I don’t assume witnesses remember things exactly. Most of the time we don’t pay that close attention, right? But if it looks close, sing out.”

Sarah gave a game nod. “Tell him I’ll do my best.”

“She’ll do her best,” I relayed.

I opened the folder and started slowly flipping through the printouts, one eye on her as I did so. Sarah’s brows were beetled together in concentration, eyes intent on the logos. The first three didn’t strike anything but she threw up a hand on the fourth.

“Wait. That almost looks right?”

The logo in question was boxier in shape, not oval as she’d described, but otherwise fit. It had a gold border and green trees at least. “So maybe?”

“Definite maybe.”

Tennet handed me a sticky note pad and I pulled one off in order to mark that one.

Then I kept flipping. Sarah stopped me three more times, and each time, the logo was very similar to what she’d described. She looked frustrated at the end, chewing on her bottom lip.

“I’m sorry, I wish I could narrow it down more.”

“Cheri, you’re doing fine,” I assured her. “You took the list down from twenty to four, and that saves us a lot of legwork and time.”

Tennet was all smiles. “Seriously, this does help. You’re consistent, too, with the design, which tells me that even if these four aren’t it, it’s something very similar to this. Good job. Hand that back to me now.”

I handed it over and gave Sarah a pat on the shoulder. She did look happier under our reassurances, but frustrated too. If I was in her shoes, unable to tell the name of my killer, I’d be just as agitated, no doubt.

Gilmore made the comment, “We can dig into companies that were owned by two brothers in their forties, or companies owned by a family, and that might help narrow it down too. It’s all a process, Sarah, don’t fret.”

It occurred to me I should have kept Brooklyn a little longer. Maybe had her go through a yearbook to see if she could identify the girl.
